Minicomputers

A Minicomputer can be an inexpensive alternative to a laptop or notebook computer for drawing your map. Since it is so small, a minicomputer can also be used as a convenient video player for your projection show. Setup will require some computer know-how, but if you are willing to put in the effort, it can definitely work for you. There are a variety of minicomputers out there that are likely to work, but these below are a few I have successfully tested.

Keep in mind that your projector can serve as your monitor, but you will likely need a mouse and keyboard to use these. Any USB mouse and keyboard will do, so if you have them on hand you are good to go. Otherwise, you can purchase a set like this inexpensively.

Mini PC Windows 10 Computer
This tiny computer (only 4.5″ x 4.5″ x 1″) is easily small enough to fit in a projector box. It comes with Windows 10 installed and functions just like a typical Windows desktop or laptop computer. The Windows version of our mapping software runs very well on it. Connects to the projector via the included HDMI cable. Includes WiFi connectivity so you can communicate with us over the Internet and download your videos directly to the computer. About $100

Libre Computer Le Potato Raspberry Pi Alternative
Raspberry Pi has long been known as the standard for minicomputers, but the recent chip shortage has made their most inexpensive model really difficult to find. This alternative has the same profile and functions very similar to the Raspbery Pi 3b. The price is astonishing at only $35, but it does not include a mini-SD card or a power supply, both of which are required to make it go. The manufacturer provides disk images to install a compatible operating system. We found that Raspbian Bullseye was the best desktop style operating system for it, since others run very slow on it. We have a Linux version of our mapping software that works great and Kodi is a video player that runs very well on it.
